Chicago’s Gilded Age and the Mystery of Murder. You may want to do some homework before this trip, flipping through Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City. A local guide recreates the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair chronicling the lives of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect behind the fair and Dr. H. H. Holmes one of America’s first serial killers who lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed “Murder Castle”. During our driving tour of downtown Chicago and Hyde Park, which was the site of the fair, you will see many of the locales mentioned in the book: the Rookery, Midway Plaisance, University of Chicago campus and more. Weather permitting, there will be opportunities to step off the bus and see some places up close and personal. The Berghoff Restaurant, serving the Windy City since 1898 and the proud owner of Chicago’s first liquor license, is the site for our lunch!
