On our way home we will take a slight detour to Bartlett, Illinois where we will tour a most talked about piece of Chicagoland architecture, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. This is an extravagant Hindu temple considered by most to be a masterpiece of ancient design and craftsmanship. Built in 2004, at the time it was the largest Hindu temple built outside of India. It is a fusion of traditional Indian architecture with modern technology. The structure was completed in 16 months by 1700 volunteers. It consists of 31,000 square feet of marble and granite, 29,000 square feet of carrara marble and 36,000 cubic feet of Turkish Limestone. The stones were carved in India and shipped to the US to be put together like Lego’s. A truly amazing piece of architecture.
